Auckland Zoo’s South East Asia Jungle Track is a world-leading, wildlife visitor experience unlike anything ever offered in Aotearoa. It offers visitors an immersive journey through four distinctly landscaped experiences – the High Canopy, the Lake and Wetlands, the Swamp Forest and the Lowlands as well as the award-winning Te Puna Café.
These immersive habitats and visitor amenities comprise one-fifth of the Zoo (18,700 m2). Here visitors discover and connect with some of South East Asia’s most iconic and threatened wildlife. Drawing on the ecology and biology of the animals in the wild, the design of the habitats creates a rich, complex and stimulating environment for each species that provides flexibility and choice and allows for a wide expression of natural behaviours.
Such precious habitats required a specialist and thoughtful approach to their construction. As part of this construction, Natural Habitats was engaged to complete expert works that would ultimately form some of the subtle, yet critical elements of the project.
From carefully cultivated mulch to bespoke animal bedding and topsoil formulation, Natural Habitats embraced its adept technical knowledge to create and supply these unique elements. Additionally, expertise in rock placement and large specimen tree logistics and installation were small, yet essential to deliver a project of this calibre.
